Architect, developer, ops, data or a career change? Match your job goal to the right AWS cert, see current exam fees…
Quick answer: Pick the AWS cert that matches the job you want next. Beginners and non-technical roles start with Cloud Practitioner. Designers take Solutions Architect Associate, coders take Developer Associate, and operations people take SysOps / CloudOps Associate. Professional and Specialty exams come after real hands-on experience.↗ Share on X

The right AWS certification depends on the job you want next, not on which exam is most popular. If you are new to cloud or work in a non-technical role, start with Cloud Practitioner. If you want to design systems, take Solutions Architect Associate. If you write code, take Developer Associate. If you keep systems running, take the operations exam (SysOps Administrator, now renamed CloudOps Engineer). Data and machine learning roles have their own associate exams. Professional and Specialty certs come later, once you have real hands-on experience.

How are AWS certifications organized?

AWS sorts its exams into four levels. Each one expects more experience than the last.

LevelWho it is forTypical experience AWS suggests
FoundationalBeginners, sales, managers, career changersLittle or no hands-on AWS work
AssociatePeople who build or run things on AWSAround one year of hands-on work
ProfessionalSenior engineers and architectsAround two years designing and running real systems
SpecialtyExperts in one area, like security or networkingDeep experience in that specific area

You do not have to go in order. AWS removed the old rule that you needed an Associate cert before a Professional one. But skipping levels without the experience is the most common way people fail and lose the exam fee.

Every AWS certification is valid for three years. After that you recertify, usually by passing the current version of the exam or a higher-level one in the same path.

Should you start with Cloud Practitioner?

It depends on where you are coming from.

Take Cloud Practitioner first if:

Skip it and go straight to an Associate exam if:

Cloud Practitioner teaches the vocabulary: what EC2, S3, IAM and VPC are, how billing works, and the shared responsibility model. Associate exams assume you know all of that and test how you use it. Many technical job postings list an Associate cert, not Cloud Practitioner. So if your goal is a technical job, the Associate is usually where the career value starts.

What does each Associate exam really test?

All three main Associate exams cover core services, but they look at them from different angles.

1. Solutions Architect Associate. Tests whether you can choose the right services for a design. Questions often describe a company's needs and ask for the best architecture: cheapest, most reliable, most secure or fastest. It is the most common first Associate cert because the skills apply to many roles.

2. Developer Associate. Focuses on building apps with AWS. Expect questions on Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SDKs, CI/CD tools, and how to handle errors and permissions in code.

3. SysOps Administrator / CloudOps Engineer Associate. Focuses on running systems day to day. Monitoring, logging, backups, patching, automation and fixing problems. It is often considered the most hands-on of the three.

4. Data Engineer Associate. Covers moving, storing and transforming data. Think data pipelines, data lakes and analytics services.

5. Machine Learning Engineer Associate. Covers building, deploying and monitoring machine learning models on AWS.

A simple test: read the official exam guide for each one. The guide lists the domains and their weights. Pick the exam whose topics sound like what you want to do every day at work.

How much do AWS exams cost and how long do they take?

At the time of writing, AWS lists these prices in U.S. dollars. Prices can change and may differ by country, so confirm on the AWS site before you pay.

LevelExam feeExam length
Foundational$100About 90 minutes
Associate$150About 130 minutes
Professional$300About 180 minutes
Specialty$300About 170 to 180 minutes

Ways to cut the cost:

How long should you study?

There is no fixed number. It depends on your background and how many hours you can give each week. A realistic way to plan:

1. Take a practice test before you study. It shows what you already know and where the gaps are.

2. Read the official exam guide. List every domain and how much it weighs.

3. Study the heaviest domains first. If one domain is 30% of the exam, it deserves more time than one worth 10%.

4. Build something in each domain. Reading about a VPC is not the same as setting one up and breaking it.

5. Take full practice exams under time limits. Review every wrong answer and write down why the correct answer is better.

6. Book the exam when you are scoring well and consistently on practice tests. Booking a date also keeps you from studying forever.

Most people with some IT background study for several weeks to a few months for an Associate exam. Complete beginners usually need longer.

Where does AWS fit next to other tech certs like PMP?

AWS certs prove cloud skills. They are not the only path, and they work well alongside others.

Look at 20 job postings for the role you want in your city or remote market. Write down which certs they mention. That list is a better roadmap than any ranking online.

Common mistakes when choosing an AWS cert

Your next step: a 7-day decision plan

1. Day 1: Write down the exact job title you want in the next 12 months.

2. Day 2: Collect 20 job postings for that title and note every cert mentioned.

3. Day 3: Match the most common AWS cert from your list to the table above.

4. Day 4: Download the official exam guide for that cert and read every domain.

5. Day 5: Take a free practice question set on AWS Skill Builder.

6. Day 6: Create an AWS Free Tier account and set a billing alarm.

7. Day 7: Pick a target exam date six to ten weeks out and block study time on your calendar.

At the end of the week, you will have a cert chosen for a real reason and a plan to pass it.

FAQ

Do I need Cloud Practitioner before an Associate exam?

No. AWS does not require it. It helps beginners and non-technical people, but if you already work with AWS or IT, you can go straight to an Associate exam.

How long is an AWS certification valid?

Three years. To keep it, you usually pass the current version of the exam or a higher-level exam in the same path before it expires.

Which AWS Associate exam is the best first choice?

Solutions Architect Associate is the most common first choice because its skills apply to many roles. Developers may prefer Developer Associate, and operations staff may prefer SysOps / CloudOps Associate.
